You cannot request a Standard or Enhanced DBS check simply because you would prefer a more detailed check. The employee’s duties, workplace and who they work with determine whether the role is legally eligible.
For any role — individuals or employers
When should an employer choose this?
Use a Basic check when the position is not legally eligible for a Standard or Enhanced check. It can support general recruitment for roles such as construction, hospitality, retail and ordinary office work.
What will it show?
Unspent convictions and conditional cautions held on the Police National Computer.

When should an employer choose this?

What will it show?
It is intended for eligible positions of trust, not ordinary recruitment.
Spent and unspent convictions, cautions, warnings and reprimands, subject to the statutory filtering rules.

When should an employer choose this?
Use an Enhanced check for an eligible role involving work with children or vulnerable adults. The job title alone is not enough—the person’s actual duties, workplace and frequency of contact determine eligibility.
What will it show?
The information included in a Standard DBS check, together with relevant information held by local police.

✓ A barred-list check is not automatically included with every Enhanced check
