Terms & Conditions
These terms apply when you use DBS Support (dbschecks.org) to apply for a DBS check. We’re a DBS Registered Umbrella Body — we’re not the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) itself, but we help you apply, verify your identity, and submit your application to DBS on your behalf.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Basic check. Standard and Enhanced checks can only be requested by an employer or organisation on your behalf — see our Questions page for details.
2. Fees and payment
Our fee includes the statutory fee DBS charges for the check itself, plus our fee for verifying your identity and handling your application. The current price for each check type is shown before you pay. Payment can be made by you or, where applicable, by a third party such as an employer on your behalf.
3. Providing accurate information
By applying, you confirm that the information you’ve given us is complete and accurate. Knowingly making a false statement in connection with your application is a criminal offence. We (or DBS) may ask you for further information to complete your check, and you agree to tell us promptly if anything you’ve told us changes before your check is complete.
You authorise us, and any identity verification provider we use on our behalf (currently CBS Screening Limited, and TrustID where you choose the digital identity route — see below), to verify the information in your application and submit it to DBS or Disclosure Scotland for a criminal record check.
4. Proving your identity
We need to verify your identity before we can submit your application. You can do this via a Responsible Person, at the Post Office, or — if you hold an eligible document — digitally through our verification partner, TrustID. See our Questions page for what’s involved in each route.
If you choose digital identity verification
I consent to my identity being verified using DBS Support’s digital identity verification service, provided by TrustID. I understand this involves TrustID capturing and checking a facial image and my identity document, that this is special category biometric data, and that I can choose manual identity verification instead at any time without affecting my application. If my digital check is unsuccessful, I will be offered one free retry; if that also doesn’t succeed, I will be moved to manual verification at no extra charge.
5. Timescales
We aim to process and submit your application quickly once your identity is verified, but the certificate itself is issued by DBS, and we don’t control how long that takes. See our Questions page for typical timescales — these are estimates, not guarantees.
6. Cancellations and refunds
You have a 14-day cancellation right from when you agree to these terms. Because you ask us to begin work straightaway, if we’ve already started reviewing and validating your application before you cancel, a £20 charge applies to reflect that work; if the service completes fully within the 14 days, the cancellation right no longer applies. If required information or documents aren’t provided within 6 months of your application, we’re unable to progress it any further and, as the check itself couldn’t be completed, no refund can be given at that point.
7. Your certificate, and if something on it is wrong
Your certificate is based on a match between the information you’ve provided and Police National Computer and other official records; DBS is responsible for the accuracy of these records, not us. If your certificate is issued and it shows information you believe is incorrect or doesn’t relate to you, DBS operates a formal disputes and appeals process — contact us and we’ll point you to it.
Your certificate belongs to you as the named individual. You must not alter any certificate or document we or DBS issue to you.
8. Our responsibility to you
We’ll take reasonable care in providing our service, but we can’t guarantee DBS’s own processing times or the content of the records they hold, and we’re not liable for delays or outcomes that are outside our control. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for anything that can’t legally be limited, such as death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or fraud.
9. Your consent to proceed (distance contract)
This service is classed as a distance contract under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and you’re entitled to the 14-day cancellation period described in section 6. By completing an application and proceeding to payment, you agree to these terms and confirm that the declaration in section 3 is true.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute will be handled by the courts of England and Wales.
11. Complaints
If you’re unhappy with our service, please contact us first using the details below and we’ll do our best to put things right. For how we handle your personal data specifically, see our Privacy Notice, which also explains your right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time to reflect changes in our services or the law. The current version will always be available on this page.
